It makes a change to put something other than fruit in the freezer!
It now includes ducks and partridge too, beating yesterday for the first shoot of the season in Nutfield with my sons normally marks the first day of Autumn, coming home to a well earned glass of red wine and warming log fire; but instead last night I was greeted with a barbecue and a nice cold white burgundy.
It gave a great opportunity to try some of the chutneys made with the later foraged berries with burgers, sausages and surprisingly tuna too.
The Lemon and Lavender chutney, soon to be found in the new Mayfield Lavender shop, tastes surprisingly good with barbecued fish. We already knew it was great with burgers :) but the sloe chutney, elderberry chutney and hedgerow chutney also had their first run out.
I don't have a favourite, each has it's own individual notes; my earlier concerns about there possibly being cross overs in taste proved well and truly unfounded.
Lavender Jelly (also available from Mayfield Lavender soon!) is great with ice cream, cheese and crumpets is also superb with plain barbecued chicken. I'm almost tempted to go and buy a turkey, an early Christmas lunch just to try the sloe chutney instead of the more common cranberry sauce. It does seem a little too warm for that yet... but by the end of the month with snow forecast I might just have to!
I've had a few more email entries for the car sticker competition - almost voting time.
The entries so far...

Having mentioned that the Lavender Jelly and Lemon & Lavender Chutney will soon be available from Mayfield Lavender it only remains for me to deliver their first order. Finally the first labels arrived from the new printer so as well as delivering the first retail order our other labels can now be ordered so we'll be ready in plenty of time for the first three markets to include Foragers Finest products at the end of the month.
Friday 28th October - Reigate Food Lover's Farmer's Market
Saturday 29th October - Godalming Independent Market
Sunday 30th October - Tatsfield Craft Fair
Hope to see you there!
Jonathan
